The Laboratory of Animal Physiology and Biochemistry of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nanjing Agricultural University is the only key laboratory in the field of animal physiology and biochemistry in China. The present faculty consists of 22 professors, seven associate professors, four lecturers and two technical assistants. The lab offers learning and research in a series of specialties, including physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell and histochemistry, nutrition and immunology; owns over 5,000 square meters of research and office space, and has built laboratories in animal physiological regulation, functional gene expression, animal behavior, gel analysis, animal anatomy, tissue morphology, lactation biology, molecular hybridization, cell culture, ruminant research, immunohistochemistry, animal structure and function, and protein function, radio immunity, all equipped with sophisticated instruments at a total value of up to 10 million RMB. The laboratory can fully meet all the needs in scientific research.

The members of our lab have focused research on animal physiology, biochemistry and bio-regulation, aiming to study and elucidate the mechanisms of nutrition, growth, immunity, reproduction, lactation, at integrative, systemic, cellular and molecular levels, and have developed a series of bio-regulation techniques. During the “12th Five-Year Plan” period, we published 422 papers in the international SCI journals, 440 in core Chinese periodicals; have been approved of seven invention patents, four utility patents, one software copyright patent, and have formulated one copy of industry standard. We have won two second prizes for National Science and Technology Progress and two second prizes at provincial and ministerial levels. Our lab bears the main responsibility as the editor-in-chief of textbooks such as Animal Physiology and Animal Biochemistry. During this period, our lab enrolled a total of 117 PhD students and 242 master students. The laboratory has actively engaged in a wide range of international and domestic academic exchanges and the combination of “production, study and research”. During the “12th Five-Year Plan” period, we undertook more than 20 international cooperation projects, and 10 teachers went to developed countries in Europe and America for academic exchanges and cooperation for about one year each. The laboratory has hosted two international academic exchanges, and the teachers have attended 20 international conferences and made keynote speeches on the invitation of the conference. More than 20 foreign experts have been invited to come to China for academic exchanges. The laboratory has close cooperation with relevant laboratories in Germany, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and enjoys a high reputation in the international academic community.
